Robert Runser Named "Young Engineer of the Year"

Robert Runser of Applied Research was named the 2005 "Young Engineer of the Year" by the Engineering Society of Baltimore. He received this recognition at the March 31, 2006, Engineers Week Council banquet in Baltimore.

The society presents the annual award to an engineer, age 35 or younger, who is a society member and distinguished by:

  • Engineering experience and achievements
  • Educational and collegiate achievements
  • Professional and technical society activities
  • Continuing competence
  • Civic and humanitarian activities

Robert's accomplishments include:

  • 30 peer-reviewed journal papers, most in highly regarded IEEE publications
  • Research in quantum cryptography that has led to several important results
  • Doctoral work at Princeton University in ultra-high-speed switching technology, an area in which he holds a significant patent
  • Positions held in conferences sponsored by the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society and participation in local IEEE Communications Society activities
  • Active participation in the Optoelectronics Industry "Big Broadband" initiatives
  • Active participation in several community organizations and fund-raising efforts, including St. John the Evangelist Church and the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults
