Steven is working on the technical definition of Customer Premises Networks and Residential Gateways, which will distribute broadband signals within the home to devices such as computers and televisions. He came to Applied Research from Professional Services in 1995, where his earlier work as a Senior Systems Engineer included microwave transmission systems to deliver video and two-way data services to residence customers (LMDS and MMDS), analysis of impulse noise on telephone cable, analysis of splice degradation and curing using sealing current, and development of generic requirements for the ISDN Basic Access Digital Subscriber Line (DSL): Steven was the editor of Telcordia Technical Advisory TA-NWT-000393, which first defined the DSL, and he was subsequently editor of Telcordia Technical Requirement TR-NWT-000397, which implemented the DSL in network elements.
Steven has a BE from Cooper Union, and an MS and PhD from Stanford University. After graduation from Stanford, he was a National Research Council Resident Research Associate at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, where he worked on the Pioneer 10 mission to Jupiter. After a brief stint teaching electrical engineering and computer science, he joined Bell Laboratories, and moving to Telcordia at divestiture in 1984. His previous work at Telcordia and Bell Labs was in lightning protection of telephone cable, inductive interference, cellular radio, cable television, fiber-based transmission systems, cable crosstalk, and transmission systems for ISDN.
He received the Telcordia Distinguished Member of Technical Staff award in 1989.
Steven is an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at The Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York, a Program Evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
He also has a "second career," in the theater: He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in the summer of 1973 and summer of 1974, and then taught acting at Barnard College (Columbia University), and was acting teacher and coach for the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players for seven years. He is a member of the Actors Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States.
