Ravi Jain received the Ph. D in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992. Prior to that he worked at Syntrex Inc., SES Inc. and the Schlumberger Laboratory for Computer Science on developing communications and systems software, performance modeling, and parallel programming.
In 1992 Jain joined Telcordia as a Research Scientist in the Personal Communications Services (PCS) area. His research interests include design and analysis of algorithms, architectures and protocols for mobile computing and communications, including techniques for locating mobile users, mobile database access, and mobile sales applications. He was technical team leader for the the SCOUT system, which delivers personalized road traffic information to mobile users. For the past couple of years he has also been working in the areas of Internet telephony and service creation in next-generation networks.
Currently Jain is Senior Scientist in the Information and Computer Sciences Research Laboratory at Telcordia Technologies. Recently he has been engaged in the design and implementation of an optimized version of mobile IP, called Mobile IP with Location Registers (MIP-LR), which provides enhanced performance, survivability, and interoperability with QoS protocols like RSVP and Diff-Serv. Currently he is involved in the design of systems for rapid creation of telephony services using third-party software components, and middleware for nomadic access to information services.
Jain is guest editor of the Special Issue of ACM's Mobile Networks and Applications journal (MONET) on "Wireless Internet and Intranet Access" (forthcoming), and of the Special Issue of IEEE JSAC on "Networking and Performance Issues of Personal Mobile Communications" (Sep. 97). Jain was guest co-editor of the Distributed and Parallel Databases journal's Special Issue on "Databases and Mobile Computing" and is an area editor for MONET, MC2R and IEEE Personal Communications. He has several issued and pending patents, mostly in the area of wireless and personal communications.
Jain is a member of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon and Phi Kappa Phi honorary societies, a senior member of IEEE, and a member of ACM and INFORMS.
