Melbourne Barton



Melbourne Barton received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering with first class honors, from the University of the West Indies, the M.Sc. degree in telecommunications systems from the University of Essex, United Kingdom, and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Rhode Island in 1978, 1981, and 1988, respectively. He was a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of the West Indies from 1983 to 1990. He joined the Applied Research Area of Telcordia Technologies in 1990 and worked on ADSL technology to support high-speed digital transport over local telephone copper loops. Subsequently, he worked on various broadband wireless and wireline integration issues and next generation wireless systems concepts and technologies, including next generation wireless access to ATM transport networks. He is currently leading Telcordia's wireless ATM standardization activities in the ATM Forum. Dr. Barton is a former British Commonwealth and Fulbright-LASPAU scholar, and is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
