James Dixon was born in Orange, NJ USA on March 14, 1959. He received the B.S. degree (with highest honors) in electrical engineering from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA in 1981, and the M.Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 1982.

From 1982 to 1984, he was a Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Whippany, NJ, where he was involved in the development and design of digital transmission systems for the local loop. He designed several circuits for Digital Loop Carrier Systems.

In December 1984, he joined Telcordia Technologies in Morristown, NJ, where he is a Research Scientist. At Telcordia, he worked on the implementation and standardization of the U-interface for ISDN Basic Access, and he was involved in an effort to identify and implement speech coding schemes for studio quality speech at 64kbps and others to be used in Universal Digital Portable Communications systems. His research efforts then returned to high speed digital transmission systems. He investigated the feasibility/viability of high speed Echo Cancellers for application in HDSL systems and of the Analog Line Interface for ADSL systems. He was later involved in the implementation/integration of an ADSL transceiver into the Telcordia Technologies Store-And-Forward Video-Dial-Tone System. He also designed a Set-Top Box for this system. Most recently, he has turned his attention to home networks, including IEEE 1394, and Residential Gateways, which are the intelligent interfaces between access networks and home networks.

Jim has a number of hobbies. He plays trombone in many local instrumental music organizations. He also enjoys the outdoors. He is a licensed private pilot, and he likes biking, sailing, and hiking.
