Jon R. Kettenring

Jon R. Kettenring is Executive Director of the Mathematical Sciences Research Center at Telcordia Technologies. The MSRC consists of three core groups performing research in areas of security and cryptography, network traffic and performance analysis, and network design including algorithms and optimization. It is also an umbrella organization for the larger mathematical sciences community within Telcordia Technologies. The mission of the MSRC is to give Telcordia Technologies a competitive edge through invention and application of mathematical sciences techniques for its various products and services.

Kettenring joined Telcordia in 1983 after 15 years in the Statistics and Data Analysis Research Department at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill where he engaged in and supervised statistics research.. His first job at Telcordia was to create and direct the Statistics Research Group which he did for five years. In 1986 he also became Executive Director of the Statistics and Economics Research Department. From 1994 to 1998, he served as Executive Director of the Software Technology Research Department.

Throughout his career, he has maintained a strong interest in statistics research and its application to solve real problems in the telecommunications industry. Along with numerous collaborators, he is responsible for the invention of robust statistical methods for multivariate analysis, practical tools for cluster analysis, and a variety of other methods for high-dimensional data analysis. Areas of application include statistical studies of corporate risk in a regulated company, market behavior of telephone company bonds, work design and job satisfaction, and designing courses to satisfy training needs. Other interests include software quality and reliability, process improvement, data mining, the study of massive data sets, and communications between statisticians and engineers.

He has represented a "statistics in industry" perspective in a variety of national and international assignments. These include President of the American Statistical Association, Chair of the Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics and member of the Board on Mathematical Sciences of the National Research Council, Board of Trustees of the National Institute of Statistical Sciences, and Board of Directors of the Interface Foundation of North America.

All of his degrees are in statistics: B.S. and M.S. from Stanford University and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. He is a Fellow of ASA and AAAS and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. He is an avid tennis player and enjoys long walks and exotic travels.
