Who We AreBob HorganDirector, Chief Scientist, Applied Research Software Environment Research Department
Career Highlights: Over the last ten years my colleagues and I have worked on a wonderfully perplexing problem -- how to make large-scale, commercial software robust and reliable. We've collaborated with real development teams and have come to understand the great complexity of this problem. Our efforts focus on dynamic analysis techniques that apply to software in the large and in the small. From this work has come the xSuds Software Understanding Environment that provides testing, analysis, and debugging of C and C++ programs. We are now looking at higher level models of software design and architecture with the same objective of robust and reliable software.
I also work with researchers in the academic community. For several years, the Bellcore/Purdue Software Reliability Workshop addressed the basic relationship between software testing and software reliability. I continue to do this work. I've also been involved in the NSF Software Engineering Research Center's effort to bring universities and industry together. In 1997, I Co-chaired the International Symposium on Software Reliability Estimation that is an excellent source of reliable software ideas. Applied research is an exciting place. My colleagues are diverse and creative, and the telecommunications industry poses great challenges in software engineering research and practice. My Background:
